Summer Camp at the Watershed Nature Center

Programs

"Wade Into Wetlands"

Students will study various aspects of wetland life including mammals, reptiles, amphibians and aquatic macro-invertebrates. Students will use dip nets to capture specimens for study, create science journals to record observations, theories and questions, and develop nature journals to record poetry and sketches. Art activities will include the creation of clay sculptures of animals found in wetlands and gyotaku, the Japanese art of using fish to make prints.

"Pond Investigations"

Students will take part in a multidisciplinary exploration of the wetland ecosystem at the Watershed Nature Center. Science activities will center on direct observation, scientific inquiry methods and data collection. Art-related topics will reflect the diverse wetland habitat and include gyotaku and clay sculpture.

The Teachers

Marie Hackett teaches fifth grade at Albert Cassens School. She served as the first teacher for the District 7 environmental education program at the Watershed from 1998 to 2003.

Betsy Parks is currently an art teacher at Lincoln Middle School in Edwardsville. She has been a teacher with District 7 for over 25 years.
